SOFT POWER

I recently popped across to Bristol to see the Soft Power exhibition at RWA.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I am so glad that I went as I thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn’t my intention to write about it here so the images were taken as reminder for myself but I hope you still enjoy them.

The artists were past and present, famous, and anonymous for fear of persecution.

Here I am sharing the explanatory text given at the entrance to the show.

SOFT POWER

Lives told through textile art

The experience told through cloth resonates beyond words. The artworks in this eshibition embody the power of a medium that, though soft, has always been strong enough to hold the weight of history, identity and hope.

These textiles range from the intimate to monumental. They show us that through materials and making, a record can be created that connects us with out history and our heritage, our culture, families and ourselves.

Cloth speaks of out everyday experiences in threads that are twisted, knotted and patched. It speaks of longing, of love unspoken, of loss. Glistening folds or complex weavings can describe ambition, transformation and dreams.

Cloth can express who we are, create shared experiences and look to the future. Soft power.
